Kathy Moses will read and sign Helen LaFrance: Folk Art Memories from 6-7pm on Thursday, May 17th.
Helen LaFrance is a significant American self-taught artist and memory painter who gained recognition in the 1980s, although she painted all her life. She documented her Western Kentucky rural and small-town experiences, first in Viola and then, for more than thirty years, in Mayfield. This versatile creator may be studied from various perspectives – as a regional Southern artist, an African American artist, a female artist, a memory painter and a contemporary American artist. Like a kaleidoscope with multifaceted prisms reflecting light, LaFrance’s artistry suggests multiple meanings within multiple contexts.
